Toxic Foods

Sometimes it’s hard to keep track of what your pet can eat. Some foods are great for your pet, but some can leave them feeling sick or worse (cause severe and fatal conditions). Below we have made a list of the potentially dangerous foods for your pet.

· Alcohol

· Apple Seeds

· Apricot, Peach and Cherry Pits

· Avocados

· Chocolate, Coffee and caffeine

· Garlic and Onions

· Grapes

· Gum

· Macadamia Nuts and Walnuts

· Mouldy Foods

· Mushrooms

· Mustard Seeds

· Potato Leaves and Stems

· Raisins

· Rhubarb Leaves

· Salt in High quantities

· Tomato leaves and stems

· Xylitol (artificial sweetener)

· Yeast Dough

This list can be overwhelming but the foods that cause the most deaths from the list above are: Chocolate, coffee, caffeine, xylitol, onions, garlic, alcohol, grapes and macadamia nuts. If these foods can be avoided strictly, then your pet has the best chance at having a healthy lifestyle.

If for some reason your pet ingests any of the above foods, please contact your vet to find out how much can be ingested before the food becomes dangerous. Timing is important in these cases as vomiting may be a suitable solution before the food begins to breakdown and becomes digested. Inducing vomiting may not always be the appropriate treatment and it may be too late for that option in some cases, but veterinarians still have other treatment protocols that can be called upon to reduce the severity of toxicity in your pet.
