Rabbit Vaccination
Rabbit Calicivirus is a disease which damages the rabbit's internal organs such as the liver and gut and can also cause bleeding. Calicivirus is spread from direct contact with wild rabbits, The virus may also be carried by the wind or by flies, fleas, and mosquitoes.
-There is no cure for Calicivirus. Generally, 70-100% of rabbits die once affected.
-There is no treatment for a calicivirus infection.
-A vaccine (Cylap®) is available, to help protect pet rabbits from the various strains of calicivirus.
-Rabbits less than 12 weeks are given one injection followed by a booster one month later. Rabbits over 12 weeks of age are given a single dose of vaccine.
-Vaccination must then be continued every six months for life. The vaccine offers very good immunity and is essential for protection of all pet rabbits.
-Reducing contact with wild rabbits and controlling mosquitoes and fleas in your rabbit’s environment is also very important.
