Otitis
Otitis ‘inflammation of the ear’ is a common condition in dogs and is occasionally seen in cats.
There are various causes such as allergies, parasites, tumours and foreign objects such as grass seeds. Once the inflammation is triggered, the ear canal will respond with redness, swelling and increased wax production. This will allow secondary yeast and bacterial infections to occur which are painful and itchy.
Most owners will first notice Otitis when their pet begins to scratch at their ears, shake or tilt their head and rub their ears on the floor and on objects. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose bacterial and yeast infections, but additional work may be required to determine if there are underlying issues which caused the infection.
Various treatments are available from your veterinarian such as medicated ear drops and ointments as well as ear washes and flushes. If you suspect your dog may have ear issues, please consult your local veterinarian for a check-up.
