Ah Choo! Or it this case *scratch scratch ðŸ˜¤

We know how miserable allergies can make us humans, well much is the same for our fluff babies.
Hence why we’ve decided to focus on Environmental Allergies this month in the clinic.

Atopic dermatitis is the name given to environmental allergies and includes pollens, spores, dust, danders and dust mites. They can be inhaled or absorbed through the skin and unlike humans’ animals rarely have runny eyes/nose or coughing/sneezing.

Atopic dermatitis is a progressive disease and usually gets worse with age as the animal is exposed to allergens over and over. Animals are usually allergic to a combination of allergens which cannot be cured and often need to be controlled. Signs that your pet may be suffering from atopic dermatitis can include itchy feet, legs, face, neck, and abdomen.

Red, itchy or painful ears with recurrent infections are also common. Atopic dermatitis can mimic other skin diseases and is diagnosed by excluded other skin diseases. Once parasites, secondary skin infections and food allergies have been ruled out, atopic dermatitis is the most likely diagnosis. Treatment of atopic dermatitis can be varied and require multiple therapeutic interventions.

Not all animals respond to the same treatments. Treatments may include but are not limited to topical shampoos, cortisone products, antihistamines, and fatty acid supplementation.

If you suspect your dog may have a skin issue, contact a veterinarian to discuss what may be appropriate for your pet.
